The City Union of Baltimore is working to ensure that every member has the proper PPE required to do their job. After hearing from the membership who work at various worksites across the city, I know what it is you need, and I have been and will continue to fight like hell to ensure that you have the resources you need to do your job. Harrisburg, PA, Thursday, March 19, 2020— AFT Pennsylvania President Arthur G. Steinberg, on Thursday, issued the following statement after it was announced that the Pennsylvania Department of Education is cancelling statewide assessments, often referred to as “standardized tests”:

I want to personally thank all of you for your courage and resolve. We’ve seen teachers and para-educators scramble to build remote learning programs out of thin air in a matter of hours. Food service workers and custodians are risking their own health to ensure children don’t go hungry. Nurses continue to sacrifice to ensure their patients get quality care. I don’t know where our state would be without your dedicated perseverance.

Due to concerns regarding the outbreak and spread of the coronavirus which causes COVID-19, Maryland has made the District 7 special election a vote-by-mail-only election. This is to fill the seat vacated by the unfortunate passing of Rep. Elijah Cummings in the fall of 2019.

I share everyone’s fear and concern about the COVID-19 also known as the coronavirus. I remain in contact with state and local authorities and will pass along any updates pertaining to our work. Beyond our professional concerns, I want to stress concern for the welfare of each and every one of our members and your families.

This pandemic is something that’s not been seen in many of our lifetimes. However, I’m confident if we follow the directions of health care professionals, we will collectively and safely overcome the coronavirus.
