FLORIDA EDUCATOR LIABILITY INSURANCE SCAM

September 10, 2019

Yesterday you received an email communication from the District's Risk Management Dept.  detailing the state's liability insurance plan for eductaors.  This is the state's way of falsely claiming you do not need to join the teacher union to be provided work-related representation.

AFT-Maryland Back to School Event

When the community calls, AFT-Maryland answers. This was the case when the state federation joined former Delegate Bilal Ali and a host of west Baltimore community members for a back-to-school family fun day. The event took place at Warwick Park and featured a number of fun and exciting activities for the children.

CUB Members Get One-Time Payout Ahead of Overtime

The job of a union is to ensure fairness for its members. The City Union of Baltimore (CUB) heard from our members and leapt into action to ensure fairness. This issue at hand: members who are supervisors in solid waste had maxed out their comp time but were denied overtime. These members were working overtime however to account for staffing shortages in the department.

BTU New Teacher Steering Meeting

With the school year underway, educators in Baltimore city eagerly welcomed their students back to school. For new educators, the first week was an opportunity to get themselves acquainted with the daily mechanics of the school and the students. The advice and preparation from others were now to be put into practice.

MPEC Member Meeting at State Center

Members made their voices heard regarding the work environment at the Maryland Department of Health. The facility has a wide range of environmental challenges that affect members, but the most recent one to cause a stir was a bedbug outbreak. The state told the union that it has treated the facility for bedbugs, but members want a full, one-time fumigation of the building.

Healthcare Updates and Information

We are in the Highmark High Performing Narrow Network of Services under the Community Blue EPO and PPO plans.  This means some UPMC Hospitals will be out-of-network. Some Highmark/UPMC Joint Ventures Hospitals will be in network.

UPMC Children’s Hospital and Western Psych will remain in network until 2029. There are also some other key agreements that are agreed to during this 10-year period. Members will have access to Emergency Rooms without having to worry about being balanced billed for whatever their insurer wouldn’t pay.  Also, specific conditions that are considered rare where only UPMC has a specialist (ex. Cystic Fibrosis), will be covered under this agreement. However it is essential that it is confirmed that Highmark will cover said specialist.

Please see the links below for clarification on your particular needs.
