News Notes & Notions - Surprises in the Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act, ACA, has been written about, talked about, implemented for several years and STILL there are myths and misinformation about it. Its full name was THE PATIENT PROTECTION AND AFFORDABLE CARE ACT.  It was designed specifically to protect patients. And now, as Obama leaves office, it is about to be repealed without a replacement ready to take its place.

News Notes & Notions - DC Opening Volleys January 2017

Of course, there is the upcoming inauguration.... but there is more as the 115th Congress prepares to do 'the people's work'.  After welcoming new members, swearing in ceremonies and orientations the House of Representatives (HR) thought the most important things to do were:

Defeat SB 11- Right to Work is Wrong for NH

The NH Senate Commerce Committee will be hearing a Right to Work (for less) bill, Senate Bill 11, on Tuesday, January 10th at 1pm. The hearing will be held at the NH State House in Representatives Hall. This bill has been scheduled quickly and has been cited as a priority by Governor Chris Sununu and the GOP majority.

We know this is wrong for NH and will hurt NH’s economy and working families. This bill has been defeated repeatedly for thirty years and nothing has changed to justify this legislation.  This a blatant attempt to weaken the voice of working familes and unions because the proponents know that when unions are strong all workers have highers wages not just union workers. To read more, please click here.

Let's join union members and allies from across NH and stand together to help defeat this destructive legislation.

Call for stories about the ACA

Kelly Troutner, Director of at AFT Nurses and Health Professionals, has reached out with concerns over what could happen to health care with the new Congress and president.  Threats to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and cut Medicaid and Medicare are considered real and could affect our members and our patients; as well as hospital, state, and municipal budgets.

Kelly has asked our help in providing stories from members about how changes could affect them, their families, and their patients. These stories need not be polished, everything helps, including just a few lines expressing concerns. They will be used to advocate for quality, affordable health care.

Could you reach out our healthcare members and ask their help?

Responses can be sent to me at Jbrady@aftct.org if you like.

Saving Medicaid, ACA, and existing healthcare programs from cuts

Dear Friends,

My friend Linda Yannone and I  have been working with different groups to expand healthcare benefits in our state. However right now its important to make sure that the healthcare benefits, (like the ACA and its Medicaid expansion program) that advocates have fought so long and hard for are not dismantled.

We've been working with Daniela Giordano, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) CT and a coalition of other organizations including CT Citizens Action Group (CCAG) in a Medicaid Strategy group to prevent cuts to Medicaid and where possible expand healthcare coverage in CT.
