Public-Sector Wages Lag Behind

Recent political discussion has focused on the alleged bloated wages of public sector employees.  A recent study commissioned by UC Berkeley and Rutgers finds that public sector wages fall behind those of the provate sector.  Those in the public sector generally have higher levels of education and yet their wages lag behind their peers in the private sector.

From the article:

The study by economists at UC Berkeley and Rutgers University found that the similar wages and benefits exist despite the fact that 55 percent of public employees in the state have a college degree, compared with just 35 percent of California's private sector workers. Education levels are usually the most important factor in determining wages, but public employees do not get the same return for their education level as private sector employees, said co-author Sylvia Allegretto.

The District's Budget Update

The Galt Joint Union High School District finally published its unaudited actuals.  Essentially, these are updated budget numbers as of September.  Here are the highlights:

  • The District's ending balance on June 30, 2010 was $3,681,583 in the positive!
  • The District will receive about $1.1 million more in 2010/11 than they expected in June
  • SInce the District is anticipating a $1.4 deficit in 2010/11, the worst case scenario leaves them with an ending balance of over $3.3 million

It is unclear why the District insists on hurting the education services we offer the community when the money is clearly in its bank account.
