NECW Presidents Message January 2010

January 19, 2010

Dear Fellow Early Childhood Workers,

As we start a New Year let us not forget the past. We formed this Union so that our voices would be heard and that business would be done in an open and transparent manner. That everyone was treated fairly and granted the same rights.

As we celebrate our Second Anniversary of many brave and courageous people who voted YES for the formation of Northcoast Early Childhood Workers we are still working on a fair contract. Progress is very slow and your members of the Negotiations team have worked many hours to try to reach agreement with NCS management on many issues.

I like this quote from President Barack Obama, “Don’t think for a minute that power concedes without a fight. We’re not afraid of a fight when all of us work together; we have what it takes to win.”

We have new buttons that state “Contract Now”. I would encourage all members to wear these buttons to let everyone know we need to complete this contract soon.

STAND UP, SPEAK UP AND BE HEARD

In  Unity,

Jennifer Turley

President of Local 6397

Northcoast Early Childhood Workers

Scenes From Galt High School

As the District takes on more debt by moving forward with the $2 million loan and makes plans to cut $1.5 million from the budget this spring, it is important to keep in mind the conditions at Galt High SChool.  Last Wednesday a ceiling tile feel to the floor in the 100s wing due to a serious water leak.  The tile almost hit a teacher and student.  While maintenance workers did a good and efficient job of fixing the tile, there is much work and investment to do to keep GHS safe.  Here are images from GHS.  Please also see more photos in the photo album link.

What is a “Weingarten” and Why Do I Care?

Weingarten rights did not come by the good graces of management. They came via a U.S. Supreme Court decision: National Labor Relations Board v. J. Weingarten, INC. (420 U.S. 251, 88 LLRM 2689)
